Japanamerica insigts

Roland Kelts is a pretty keen observer of Japanese-American cultural interaction, and I'm sure it helps that he has both cultures in him. "Japanamerica" is an intuitive look at anime (and to a little extent manga) not as an artform in itself, but as an exploration of "why" the artform is appealing to American culture.

In my opinion, Mr. Kelts introduces many compelling reasons why Japanese pop-culture holds such an allure to us in a way that is much more global in scale. He points out the ways in which Japanese and American culture are very different as well as some aspects where they are the same. I encourage you to read his work, and feel free to comment on your reaction to the book. This is a great way, especially for those who have very little experience with Japanese culture other than manga and/or anime, to start answering why is Japan so "cool."
